In a quest to deliver higher quality wireless communications for digital industry transformation, Behr Technologies recently announced its collaboration with Microsoft Azure to provide increased scalability, security and reliability for private Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) networks.

Behr worked with the Azure team to develop an end to end solution - from industrial sensors to the cloud - feeding data into analytics and visualization engines. The solution is secure, robust and affordable to install and maintain.

Behr’s “last-mile” communications solution ensures viable sensor connectivity for demanding industrial and commercial applications and, according to the companies, this joint partnership enables an out-of-the-box, end-to-end offering – from the edge to the cloud – for large-scale IoT deployments.

The foundation of this partnership is MIOTY™ by BTI , a low-power, wide-area network (LPWAN) communications solution that is the first and only to use the new ETSI standard (TS103357), telegram splitting ultra-narrow band (TS-UNB) technical specification for low throughput networks. MIOTY enables organizations to deploy their IoT networks with unimaginable capacity and high Quality-of-Service (QoS).

The integration with Azure enables MIOTY to leverage Azure’s built in intelligence to deliver end-to-end IoT solutions. MIOTY addresses the shortcomings of the existing technologies and is a reliable solution when massive scalability, long range and long battery runtimes are required. It can also process more than one million sensor messages per day with one base station using only 200kHz bandwidth.

Albert Behr, chief executive officer of Behr said, “Providing a complete sensor to cloud solution enables our customers to quickly adopt this new technology and benefit from the unique technical capabilities of MIOTY. Our solution integrates seamlessly with Microsoft Azure IoT Hub and can deploy an Azure Cloud infrastructure to provide data storage and visualization natively on Azure. This flexible architecture is perfectly suited for enhanced device management right at the edge, for example using Microsoft IoT Edge.”

One of the applications enabled by this collaboration is a unique approach to workforce safety using MIOTY by BTI wireless solution. Data health records of the workers are transmitted over sub-GHz frequencies to the base station, from where they are communicated to the Microsoft Cloud, which provides insights on workers health and alerts when danger is detected.

Rashmi Misra, general manager, IoT Solutions at Microsoft said, “With Azure services and MIOTY by BTI, customers can implement cost-effective and highly scalable solutions to facilitate the “last mile” of communication for messages delivered from sensors to the Cloud. Working with our broad partner ecosystem, we are ushering in a new era of IoT communication that will enable organizations around the world to realize the promise of industrial automation in ways that were not previously possible.”
